Famed conductor honored by Israel's president

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel's president has recognized Indian-born conductor Zubin Mehta for his contributions to Israeli society.

Mehta, music director for life of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, on Monday received Israel's Presidential Medal of Distinction. Other winners have included Henry Kissinger.

Mehta has been the philharmonic's director since 1977. He was also the longest-serving director of the New York Philharmonic.

In 2009, he started a music education program, Mifneh, which is Hebrew for "turning point," for Israel's Arab citizens.

Mehta said at Monday's ceremony that "if you can sing together, you can live together."

President Shimon Peres, a Nobel peace laureate, praised Mehta for his message of peace.

Peres said: "Israel used to be a drama, you made us into a dramatic symphony without compromising one for the other. You harmonized us."

Modern-day Puritans wring hands over Zumba Madam?s list of shame

A Maine court will consider whether?a prostitution 'list of shame' is a punishment too Puritanical even for New England, where the fallout may include schoolyard teasing and public shaming.

By Patrik Jonsson,?Staff writer / October 13, 2012

Downtown Kennebunk, Maine. The police department's plan to release some of the more than 150 names of suspected prostitution clients was delayed Friday by last-minute legal wrangling. Alexis Wright has pleaded not guilty to prostitution, invasion of privacy, and tax evasion.

In the big scheme of things, the names of the ?johns? who allegedly hired Kennebunk, Maine, Zumba dance instructor Alexis Wright for sex are simply a matter of public record if solicitation charges are leveled.

Yet on Monday, the Maine Supreme Judicial Court will consider whether what some have called Ms. Wright?s lengthy ?list of shame? is a punishment too Puritanical even for New England, where the fallout may include schoolyard teasing and public shaming to add to the powerful intrigues of southern Maine towns and villages.

?We think there's a really important principle at stake here: These people are presumed innocent,? defense attorney Stephen Schwartz said. ?Once these names are released, they're all going to have the mark of a scarlet letter, if you will.?

RELATED: Political sex scandals

In his fictional expos? of the Puritans who helped found New England, Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote in ?The Scarlet Letter? that ?there can be no outrage, methinks, against our common nature ? whatever be the delinquencies of the individual ? no outrage more flagrant than to forbid the culprit to hide his face for shame.?

The Puritanical code shamed vices in order to improve the common lot and aid common survival, and that unerring view continues to permeate not only New England, but an entire nation that remains, critics say, both egregious in its excesses and churlish in its judgments.

In recent years, some US judges have returned to the ?scarlet letter? idea by forcing convicts to publicly display what crimes they?ve committed. The US public, skeptical about the rehabilitative effects of prison, has largely applauded such sentences, according to the New York Law School?s Justice Action Center.

The Zumba Madam case is, of course, different. The names are to be released as a matter of legal course.? Soliciting a prostitute is a misdemeanor in Maine, meaning that those found guilty will face fines but no jail time. But the punishment of being publicly outed could be far worse for the politicians, policemen, farmers, accountants, and even a TV personality who are believed to be included on Ms. Wright?s client list.

?There's still some of that puritanical New England left around," Will Bradford, who owns a copy shop in town, told the Associated Press. "There are places in the world that would laugh at this."

Meantime, however, a counter-Puritan argument has emerged suggesting a more modern idea that the names should be sealed since it?s likely that innocent people will also be victimized by the release of the names.

Baseball-Tigers puts struggling closer Valverde on shelf

NEW YORK, Oct 14 (Reuters) - Detroit Tigers closer Jose Valverde, who coughed up big leads in his last two appearances, has been put on the shelf, manager Jim Leyland said before Sunday's second game of the American League Championship Series.

Valverde, a perfect 49-for-49 in save situations last season, failed to protect a 4-0 lead in Saturday's opening game against the New York Yankees, allowing a pair of two-run homers in the bottom of the ninth that sent the game to extra innings.

The Tigers prevailed 6-4 in 12 innings but Leyland said Valverde, who squandered a 3-1, ninth-inning lead in Detroit's Game Four loss to the Oakland Athletics in the Division Series, would be working on his delivery to get back on track.

"He will not close the game today if it is a close situation," Leyland told reporters. "I still consider him the closer, but he will not close the game.

"We will do some work with him ... we were looking at some stuff about his delivery. It is way too slow, the tempo is not good at all. So we're going to have to make an adjustment and I will not close the game with him today."

Leyland did not name a replacement for Valverde, saying he would use a closer by committee approach in Sunday's Game Two.

"I cannot tell you I have a definite closer for it, one name. I cannot give you one name. I have a suggestion box down by my office," he said with a laugh.

The Tigers manager, while frustrated by Valverde's struggles, said he was not giving up on the 34-year-old Dominican, who has been a vital contributor to the Tigers.

"This guy saved 110 games out of 118 opportunities in the last three years as Detroit Tiger closer. That's pretty good. Forty-nine for 49 last year. Thirty-five for 40 this year.

"The last three outs are very tough to get, and it takes a special cat in a lot of cases to do that." (Editing by Frank Pingue)
