SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) -- Headset maker Plantronics Inc. said its president and CEO started a four-month medical leave on Sunday in order to receive treatment for cancer.
Plantronics Chief Financial Officer Pamela Strayer will serve as the acting CEO during Ken Kannappan's absence.
Kannappan, 53, has worked for Plantronics since 1995 and led the Santa Cruz-based company since 1999. He is also a member of the company's board.
Plantronics said he will stay involved in directing the company during his leave "to the extent practical." A company spokeswoman said it was not releasing details on his type of cancer.
Strayer, 44, who also holds the title of senior vice president, has been CFO since July. She previously worked at Autodesk Inc., Epiphany Inc. and Informix Software.
Plantronics makes Bluetooth headsets used for hands-free cellphone calls, along with traditional wired headsets, speaker phones, and other communications devices. The company plans to report its fourth quarter and fiscal year 2013 financial results on May 7.
Shares of Plantronics Inc. closed Friday at $44.60, up about 21 percent since the start of the year. The stock hit a 52-week high of $46.02 on March 21, a level last touched in late 2004.
