Minot State University and the Minot Police Department held a disaster drill on Friday afternoon to help prepare for future emergencies. Minot State Superintendent of Security Bill Chew said that two criminal justice majors were recruited to play the roles of a shooter and hostage, while three Plant Services employees played the role of victims.
Chew said that e-mail and text message alerts went out to students on campus, just as they would have if it had been a real emergency, and he made a call to a dedicated line at the Minot Police Department to report the call and the dispatcher asked questions just as would happen in an emergency situation. About eight Minot Police Department officers were also involved in the scenario. The scenario took place in Model Hall.
Chew said he let students and faculty know about two weeks ago that the drill would be happening. He didn't want anyone to be frightened into thinking it was really happening.

Submitted Photo ? A Minot State University student pretends to be a campus shooter during a disaster drill held on Friday at MSU?s Model Hall. Three Plant Services employees pretended to be
vicitms. Minot Police and Minot State personnel participated in the disaster drill.
Chew said the scenario gave the police department and Minot State personnel an opportunity to practice what to do in an emergency. It was good experience for the police, but also for the students and staff.
"It helps the students, faculty and staff on campus too," he said. "It kind of makes them aware as to how it would probably be done."
Everyone hopes that the real thing never happens, but this will help people be better prepared, said Chew.
